This season, we’re finally seeing the NBA debut of Spanish sensation Ricky Rubio. Rubio is leading all rookies in assists, averaging 8.7 per game and he’s averaging 11.1 points. In getting to know Rubio a little better, GQ caught up with Rubio for their February issue.

GQ: Who’s the toughest team so far this year?
Ricky Rubio: Chicago, in the first quarter in particular. They played really, really well. They didn’t miss any shots. We were able to play better defense as the game went along, but they are so tough, so tough.

GQ: And point guards?
Ricky Rubio: Wow, Derrick Rose. I knew that he was quick, but not that quick. He can move his shot all over the place, he can hit threes—just so tough to guard.

GQ: Now that you’ve put in a month over here, how does the Spanish league stack up to the NBA?
Ricky Rubio: In Spain, we have a pretty good league—for me, I think it’s the second-best league in the world. They play tough there, they play aggressive. The big difference is that we play only game a week in Spain, maybe two. When you play back-to-back-to-back like we’re doing in this shortened season, you have to conserve your legs, and get ready more quickly.
